Preparing for Launch

Back at Christmas time, my brother gave our son a model rocket that you pack with a little gunpowder engine and send soaring into the sky.

However, because I am a very bad parent and not at all good at building things, it has sat in the closet ever since. Oh, and did you think I meant last Christmas? Because I mean Christmas 18 months ago.

But today, his sister was off with grandma, and so when I asked what he wanted to do, of course he wanted to build the rocket. I felt certain this endeavor would end with either a) an emergency room visit or b) the crushing disappointment of the rocket not launching at all. Because did I mention we aren’t really good at building things.

See for yourself what happened:

I know, I am the worst videographer ever.

P.S. We never found the rocket, but while I was tromping around in the brush allegedly “looking for it,” I did find this instead.

Not the rocket.

Those are one of my favorite butterflies in Texas.

Fun! We have a collection of rockets that the kids (meaning the big kid that I’m married to) love to launch. Half the fun is trying to find them afterwards.

Normally, you put a parachute on the rocket and have an engine that pops the cone at the end so that the parachute deploys.

Wayne, there was a parachute inside the rocket — it did deploy, just hard to see against the clouds. =)

Dawn, this is great. My husband and son spent an entire day building a rocket too. It had a parachute also. But after it launched we never saw it again. Do you think all these rockets end up in Russia? 🙂 At least you’ll always have the video and memories.

Sounds like an awesome day! Even if you didn’t find the rocket.

I just saw your tweet. So you did find it! Perfect. Do you get to launch it again? What fun.

I used to build those rockets with my dad and brother! It was so much fun launching them, but we *always* had to search for them. 😉
