Some days, they drive me completely nuts. At each other’s throats so much on the way to the church that before we can even get inside, they’re throwing things at each other in the back seat and kicking and glaring and generally behaving so barbaric that I can’t even bring myself to bring them into the building.
Some days, they make me laugh, teaming up to create an anti-smoking video for school that somehow needs to involve a talking dog. Dressing the dismayed dog in doll clothes, so amused at themselves that they keep busting into each other’s rooms after bedtime announcing one more idea.
Some days, those days are the same day. They’re just typical siblings.
Except that some days, my daughter asks if we have pictures of her brother’s adoption day. And I remember that they’re not typical at all, but incredible children, both of them. The girl who willingly gave up her only child status after 10 years. The boy who dared to let himself trust a new family after so many disappointments.
I don’t write much about him. I am protective, worried that his biological family will somehow stumble across this site. This picture may not stay up even now.
But tonight, as a brother and sister go to bed giggling and planning, I can’t help but share how blessed we are.
